CMS has updated its JW and JZ modifier FAQs for additional clarity on billing with these modifiers. FAQ #6 virtually excludes those that bill the DME program. The applicable DME policy articles (EIP, IVIg and nebulizer) state that “The JW and JZ modifiers are not required for drugs dispensed by the supplier and self-administered by the patient or caregiver in the patient’s home.” CMS also posted a list of drugs they claim only come in single-dose containers, hence may require the JW/JZ modifiers, depending on the setting.
